University of Applied Sciences

Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM)

Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) is a private, non-profit and state-approved University of Applied Sciences. FHM has been founded in 2000 by medium-sized enterprises and educational institutions. Since then it has developed into one of the most successful private universities in Germany and established itself as a reliable partner of medium-sized enterprises.

FHM’s goal is to provide students with necessary theoretical and hands-on skills for their later business career. The FHM educates young, talented managerial candidates. At present there are more than 3.200 students studying at the FHM on several degree programmes with an individual study organization in small elite learning groups up to 40 students.

The programmes on offer include state an internationally recognised Bachelor and Master programmes within the areas of Economics, Media/Communication, Health /Social Work, Tourism and Engineering. The concept of the FHM includes a large focus on practical, career orientation, individual tutoring and small group sizes.

Founding partners of FHM are organizations which on an international scale have been for many years successfully surporting and promoting small and medium-sized enterprises. The “Foundation for education and trade”, the “West German chamber of trade in North Rhine-Westphalia” and the “Chamber of trade of East Westphalia-Lippe for Bielefeld” have founded FHM in the year 1999.

The central campus of the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) is located in the centre of Bielefeld. In addition to the central campus there are six further locations in Cologne, Pulheim, Hannover, Rostock, Schwerin and Bamberg.

The Fachhochschule des Mittelstands FHM has additional locations in Hanover and Munich through its Institutes for Scientific Further Education (IWW). In addition, the FHM also runs the Institute for SME in Lippe, located in Detmold and a German-Chinese SME Institute (DCMI) in Suzhou, China.

FHM also runs a Studienkolleg, which is primarily designed for qualified international students who intend to enrol in a Bachelor's program in engeenering or economics in Germany and whose secondary-school diploma does not qualify for direct access to a Bachelor’s program at a German university. Studying at Pre-Studies-Program (PSP)  provides beginners with a solid academic foundation. Specialized German courses bring their language skills to an adequate level while highly qualified lecturers and a learning-enhanced atmosphere prepare the PSP-beginner for studying at a German university. Graduates of PSP are eligible to take the final examination (FSP) at the end of the program.

Profile

Applied Research

The Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) focuses on applied research and practical economic research as a partner of the SME. Based on this general principle the FHM is involved in scientific studies and research projects aimed at those fields which have a particular relevance for SME companies or are of particular, direct use for SME companies. As a result a large proportion of FHM research projects are financed through third party investment and foundation professors.

In addition to that the results of the research naturally flow into the lecture theatre. The students can benefit first hand from the research and can get involved with the various projects through academic papers or theses.
The transfer of know-how from the campus to industry is assured through publications from the FHM publishing house or external educational publishing houses, through open workshops, congresses and further education seminars. The university’s own institutes add to the large amount of significant, applied research produced by the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) for industry.
The Science Council of the Republic of Germany recognised the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM), as part of its assessment process for institutional accreditation in July 2007, for its impressive performance in the field of applied research.

Skills and areas

SME Research
The Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) was founded by the SME for the SME and as a result deliberately focusses on the needs of SME companies through its lectures and applied research. The FHM qualifies graduates suitable for managerial positions within the SME economy by way of its Bachelor and Master programmes and scientific further education modules.

Company Foundation
One of the main aims of the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) is to intensively develop and support new company start ups.  This includes leadership skills and long-term sustainability of the corporation. Research, transfer and advice are delivered by the Institute for Enterprise Foundation and Sustainability (IUG). Professors for company foundation and company leadership help the students to take the step into the self-employed world within their lecturers.

Company Succession
The Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) has been actively involved in company successions since its inception and has developed considerable competency levels through research and advice over the last few years. On top of that the relatively large number of potential company successors within the student body has lead the FHM to design specially conceptualised sandwich-styled programmes.

„Corporate Social Responsibility“ and Sustainability
In this area, issues are dealt with which concern SME companies, like traditional, developed CR activities, within the framework of a sensible CR strategy, which can optimise processes and from which shareholders, companies and the environment can profit.
